What makes Cambridge School of Bucharest such a truly special place to work?
Mr Lewis, one of our dedicated Primary teachers in Key Stage 2, shares what makes CSB a joyful, inspiring, and supportive environment for educators.
Q: What inspired you to become a Primary teacher at CSB?
After nearly 10 years of teaching in the Caribbean, I was ready for a new chapter and felt drawn back to Europe. Romania stood out to my wife and me as a country full of charm, potential, and a sense of adventure. A country still somewhat undiscovered, with so much to explore. What truly inspired me to join CSB was the school’s strong focus on growth, reflection, and continuous development. I was excited by the opportunity to contribute to a learning community where these values are not just talked about but actively lived each day.
Q: How do you make sure children feel safe and supported?
Creating a safe and supportive environment is the foundation of effective teaching. I strive to ensure that every child feels heard, valued, and comfortable to be themselves. I encourage open expression, celebrate curiosity, and help students understand that mistakes are a natural and essential part of learning. At CSB, I am fortunate to be part of a caring and inclusive community where students are consistently welcomed, acknowledged, and supported by all members of staff throughout the day.
Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching in Primary?
What I enjoy most about teaching in Primary is that no two days are ever the same. The unpredictability of what students will say or do keeps each day exciting and full of surprises. It’s a joy to watch their personalities emerge and grow, and I feel privileged to help create a space where they feel safe to be themselves. There’s always laughter, moments of joy, and so much we learn from one another; it’s a truly rewarding experience.
Q: How do CSB’s values guide your teaching?
I’m all about helping students feel they belong, boosting their confidence, and cheering on their success. When they know they’ve got a spot here and the confidence to tackle anything (from that tricky math problem to disagreements about four-square!), success usually follows. Plus, we celebrate every win, big or small, with plenty of high-fives, fist bumps and of course certificates.
Q: How does the school support you as a teacher?
CSB takes a truly holistic approach to supporting teachers. From helping new staff settle into Bucharest with a mentoring program and welcome events, to offering a variety of staff clubs (I’ve enjoyed the football team, even though I’m more of a rugby fan!). There are plenty of professional development opportunities through inset days, peer-led sessions, and online platforms. The school provides regular feedback on teaching strengths and areas to grow, and I appreciate the chance to take on different roles. Most importantly, I always feel heard and supported by management.
Q: What makes Primary at CSB special?
What stands out most is how confident and happy the students are. They genuinely enjoy seeing each other and their teachers. Everywhere I go, I’m greeted with smiles, waves, and cheerful hellos (even if they sometimes need a gentle reminder that hallways should be a quieter space!). This friendly, supportive atmosphere creates a wonderful environment where learning truly thrives.
