At Cambridge School of Bucharest (CSB), the safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority. Parents place their trust in us to provide an environment where their children feel secure, supported, and respected.
Safeguarding is the cornerstone of everything we do. From our Early Years Foundation Stage through to our Sixth Form, safeguarding and child protection guide daily practice, staff training, and the culture of vigilance across the entire school. We are proud to follow the latest safeguarding policies put in place by the UK Department for Education and Romanian law, ensuring that our standards are aligned with leading international expectations.
What does safeguarding mean at CSB?
Safeguarding is more than simply protecting children from harm. It encompasses all the measures we take to ensure that every child is healthy, safe, and able to thrive. This includes:
- Providing a safe physical environment through high health and safety standards across the site.
- Rigorous recruitment checks for all staff and volunteers.
- Regular safeguarding and first aid training for every member of staff.
- Remain vigilant by staff never leaving a child unattended, and CCTV throughout the campus.
- Safeguarding awareness sessions for all students, no matter their age.
- A culture where students know they are listened to and respected.
Our staff are not only qualified professionals; many have been part of the CSB community for many years. This stability ensures that children are supported by trusted adults who know them well and understand their individual needs.
What the latest inspection report says
The most recent British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection recognised safeguarding as a clear strength of CSB. Inspectors reported that:
- “The safeguarding policy is clear, updated at least annually to reflect current guidance and is available to staff and families.”
- “Leaders ensure that safeguarding is central to the school’s work, and a culture of vigilance is evident across the site.”
- “The school has established an effective safeguarding culture.”
- “Safeguarding is understood to be everyone’s responsibility.”
- “The school maintains an up-to-date single central record of pre-employment safeguarding checks.”
These independent findings confirm that CSB not only meets, but exceeds, international safeguarding requirements.
Has CSB ever had any issues with safeguarding?
No, CSB follows the strict safeguarding standards laid out by the UK Department for Education and Romanian law. Our policies are reviewed annually, and staff receive ongoing training to ensure procedures are always up to date. The school maintains meticulous records of pre-employment checks, including criminal background clearances, reference verification, and identity checks.
By embedding safeguarding into the daily life of the school, CSB has established a culture where children are protected at every level. This proactive approach is why we are recognised as one of the safest international schools in the region.
Training and accountability

Safeguarding is not a one-off procedure; it is a continual process of vigilance, learning, and accountability. At CSB, every adult is trained to recognise the signs of concern and to act swiftly when needed. Staff receive:
- Regular safeguarding refresher sessions to stay current with UK Department for Education guidance.
- First aid training, enabling them to respond quickly to any health emergency.
- Designated safeguarding training, ensuring leaders across the school can advise and act with authority.
- Community awareness programmes, such as Coffee Mornings and webinars on topics including AI and online safety, to ensure parents understand their role in safeguarding too.
In addition, CSB provides age-appropriate safeguarding awareness training for students, helping them to recognise risks, speak up, and protect themselves both in school and beyond.
“As a school, we are committed to keeping every child safe. Before each academic year begins, all staff members—whether teaching, administrative, custodial, or security—receive thorough training in child protection and are updated on the latest safeguarding guidance. Alongside staff training, we also prioritise raising awareness among our students, using age-appropriate language and methods through assemblies, classroom visits, one-to-one conversations, and PSCHEE lessons. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and together we work to create an environment where every child feels safe, valued, and heard.” Julia Suroz, Lead Designated Safeguarding Officer
Creating a culture of safety

The physical environment of CSB reflects our commitment to child protection. CCTV coverage throughout the school ensures that students are always in a secure setting, while supervised play and controlled entry points further strengthen site safety.
But safeguarding is not just about physical measures; it is about culture. At CSB, children are encouraged to speak openly, to trust their teachers, and to know that their voices matter. Staff model kindness, respect, and responsibility every day, reinforcing the values that make CSB a community where students feel they belong.
“In the Early Years Foundation Stage, there is little distinction between Safeguarding and the continuous holistic care that we give to our younger students – it’s a part of everything we do each day. Our trained staff are always on the lookout for signs of distress in younger students, and build strong, caring relationships with children in order to help them express feelings and concerns. Toileting assistance and the changing of clothes are performed by selected staff members all of whom take steps to prioritise the independence and dignity of the child. Our EYFS is a caring community that treats each child as important and unique, in this way we work together to protect students from anything that could jeopardise these most precious years of childrens’ development. ” Naomi Springer, Head of EYFS, Safeguarding Officer for EYFS and SENDCO.
We also believe that safeguarding is a shared responsibility with families. By holding parent meetings, Coffee Mornings, and webinars, we spread awareness of child protection and online safety, giving parents the knowledge and tools to support safeguarding at home.
How does CSB promote safeguarding outside of school?

All of our staff and parents have access to the National College Platform, a world-leading provider of professional development. Alongside its extensive training for staff, the platform also offers a wide range of videos, webinars, and resources designed to support parents in understanding online safety and safeguarding. Each year, CSB receives a certificate of recognition due to the high level of participation in these courses. To achieve this award, the school must ensure that not only staff but also a significant number of parents have completed online safety courses and accessed the available resources. This requirement demonstrates that safeguarding at CSB extends beyond the classroom, representing a complete 360-degree commitment to the protection and care of children.
Why safeguarding matters
For families considering CSB, safeguarding is often the first question asked — and rightly so. A child who feels safe is a child who can learn, explore, and grow with confidence. By maintaining the highest standards, we ensure that parents can entrust us with their children, knowing they are protected at all times.
Our long-serving staff, many of whom have dedicated years of service to CSB, embody this ethos of care. They create an atmosphere where children are not just educated, but nurtured. Safeguarding is not seen as an additional responsibility but as the very essence of our role as educators.
A message to our community
We want every parent, student, and visitor to know: CSB is a school where safeguarding is taken with the utmost seriousness. Our policies are transparent, our procedures are rigorous, and our commitment is unwavering.
The safety of our students is not negotiable. It is central to who we are, what we do, and the values we uphold. As our BSO report confirms, Cambridge School of Bucharest has built — and continues to build — an effective safeguarding culture, one that protects, supports, and empowers every child who walks through our doors.
