Lower school

The Cambridge School aims to give each child the best possible education by providing a broad and balanced curriculum within a supportive and caring environment. While we place an emphasis on acquiring the basic and essential skills of literacy and numeracy, we also provide a wide-ranging programme of study that includes the sciences, humanities, creative arts, and physical and social skills. Our lower school campus provides a safe and stimulating environment that encourages students' exploration, self-expression, and love of learning.

At lower school level, our pupils begin to develop their English language skills through a curriculum that including reading comprehension, composition, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and phonics. This in-depth exploration of the language equips pupils with the early English skills that will support their understanding across all subjects throughout their school life. Similarly, pupils begin to develop their understanding of mathematics through a combination of Arithmetic and Mental Maths. This provides students with the skills to study areas of the curriculum such as Algebra and Geometry more deeply as they progress to the middle school.

In addition to these core subjects, the lower school covers other areas including: Science, Social Studies, French, Information Technology, Physical Education, Music, Art, Drama, and Design and Technology. We also offer an hour per day of mother tongue classes for Romanian, Arabic, Turkish, and Chinese speakers. The material taught in these classes both supports the core objectives introduced in their English classes and encourages our students to take pride in the cultural and literary legacies of their own communities.

Lower school pupils take regular Controlled Assessments and study for the Cambridge Exams for Young Learners. These examinations ensure pupils are equipped with a robust skill set and allow them to take their first academic steps towards the qualifications they will be studying for later in their school careers.
